I've been trying Twitter for around one month now, barely posting but checking out many of my friends posts. The premise is quite easy, treat your twitter as if it was a free text messaging system to all your friends. Overall it's alright, but I think it's a fad. Right now, there's a bazillion new apps coming out every day that support it, but 1 year from now, nobody is going to be talking about it anymore. Here are my reasons:
- Its so simple its very easy to grow bored of it. The interface is not customizable, there are no games in it, and it is FLOODED by companies trying to sell you their things.
- Pages like Digg, Facebook, Myspace have all been victims of "being a fad". Sure, there are still millions of people who use them everyday, but nobody talks about them anymore.
- There's no way of communicating with one person without everyone knowing. Privacy dudes.
Anyway, I still think Twitter is a great marketing device, have you ever been victim of twitter announcements? How about the one Geoff Knighley made (did I get that right??) "Something great is coming at the end of the Spike VG Awards. Find out in 5 or 6 hours". God, forums went crazy. He also did the "I heard someone is coming to both, Sony and MS's press conferences". People went crazy over that too.
Anyway, the Twitter craze won't last, but that doesn't mean it is a great webpage!
